History

Thirty-three years ago, Central Washington’s first comprehensive 12-bed rehabilitation center was dedicated here at Astria Regional Medical Center – then known as St. Elizabeth Medical Center. It was no small feat. Just as today when a hospital looks to fill a need, there was a long process of review and approval from the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

When the request was first made, patients suffering stroke, nerve damage, muscle damage, or post-surgical debilitation lacked the resources to receive medical-focused rehabilitation care in an encouraging environment.  The physicians and staff at Astria Regional Medical Center understood that there was a great need for this special medical care – only available within the scope of a dedicated inpatient rehabilitation unit.

And so they put their minds and their knowledge together to convince the State of Washington that this critical service was desperately needed right here in Yakima.

When the approval finally arrived, the extensive renovation of the nursing unit at 2-South began – transforming it into Central Washington’s only designated 12-bed Level 2 inpatient rehabilitation unit. It was designed to give patients an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of independent living skills.

The new unit was a shining star that represented a comprehensive care team – from physical medicine and nursing to a range of physical, speech and occupational therapies, social services, psychological services, pastoral care, respiratory therapy, dietary care and home health. They all functioned together as components of an active and well-coordinated program to serve the Yakima Valley and beyond.

As medical advances have evolved over the past 30 years, Astria Regional Medical Center’s comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation team has embraced them. Today, the program has been recognized in the top 10-percent of the nation.

The initial approval for 12 beds has been expanded to 17 beds. But what hasn’t changed is the unwavering dedication to exceptional patient care. Many of you have experienced this service as patients – or as loved ones of patients. You know the level of care, concern and expertise the staff devotes to each patient.

Taking care of our patients is our top priority.
