What are sleep disorders?
Sleep disorders include problems related to poor quality sleep, excessive sleepiness or abnormal behaviors during sleep. Snoring, for example, may be considered a minor discomfort, but in fact may be the sign of a serious medical condition. If you or someone you love snores heavily or wakes in the night choking or gagging, he or she may be suffering from a sleep disorder.
Other sleep disorders can be just as dangerous and debilitating, causing patients to feel tired and irritable during the day. Some people frequently wake up with headaches and don't feel rested. Sleep problems can lead to poor memory and lack of concentration.
Left untreated, some disorders may cause serious medical, emotional and neurological conditions, such as cardiovascular complications, hypertension, sexual dysfunction, depression and injuries due to accidents at work or on the road.Yakima Regional's Sleep Medicine Services can help.
What to Expect
Upon referral by your primary care physician, during your first visit to the Sleep Lab we will discuss sleep disorders and discuss what treatments may be appropriate for each particular disorder. A tour of the Sleep Lab will also be offered.
In order to diagnose and treat sleep problems, our highly trained sleep technicians run a series of non-invasive but informative tests and monitor patients while they sleep in our lab overnight. The sleep lab is designed to provide a relaxing and soothing environment to make patients feel at home during their stay. After completion of the tests, a board certified physician scores and evaluates the information to best determine a plan for treatment.
